"Explore the Stars"

Astronomy in the mountains... Presented by the U.S. Forestry Service and coordinated by Russell Sipe, Explore the Stars is a free program designed to be instructional and fun for novice and experienced amateurs alike. It is held at the Observatory Campground. The campground is located some two miles below the Observatory. It is clearly marked by a Forest Service sign. Observatory Campground and Fry Creek Campground are pretty much next to each other but on opposite sides of Road S6. Camping is $7 (or so) per night a first come first serve basis, but camping is not required. Telescopes are provided for the public. After a short multimedia presentation in the amphitheater, viewing will begin. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for this event, contact Russ at sipe@sipe.com.

The details and schedule can be found at the Explore the Stars web site <here>.

All of the dates are on the Saturday closest to the First Quarter, so observing should be good no matter what time it is. After some Moon viewing early in the evening, the volunteers get down to some serious deep sky observing for the benefit of the general public. Note: Camping is first come, first served and campsites are often filled by noon on Saturday. There is parking for those who are only coming for the star party and not spending the night. Come out and join the fun!
