Palomar
Observatory. This
observatory is so named for the mountain on which it is built and
it is a conglomeration of several telescopes and scientific instruments
and is managed by Caltech. The telescope that gets the most press
is the 200 inch Hale Telescope. Commissioned in 1928 the 200"
saw "first light" in 1948. The 200" mirror weighs
14.5 tons and is still one of the largest in the world. Since its
inception the observatory has been instrumental in astronomy and
has gotten new life through efforts to modernize its instruments
with CCD and "adaptive optics" technologies.
